Next Race: Italian Grand Prix
The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid is the inaugural Formula 1 race at the new Madring circuit, so every driver arrives without previous Grand Prix experience at the venue. That makes Friday practice particularly important: teams will be learning tyre behaviour, braking points and setup requirements rather than relying on years of historical data. With no previous Madrid winner to use as a guide, current form becomes much more relevant.
Recent form: Kimi Antonelli arrives in Madrid as the man to beat. The Mercedes youngster has already won China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco and Belgium this season, and he added perhaps his most impressive victory yet at Monza last weekend. Starting only 19th after an engine penalty, Antonelli charged through the field, benefited from a well-timed stop under the Virtual Safety Car and eventually passed teammate George Russell to win. Russell finished second and Max Verstappen third, completing another extremely strong weekend for Mercedes.
Antonelli’s season hasn’t been completely straightforward. At the earlier Barcelona-Catalunya Spanish race in June, he retired, while Lewis Hamilton took his first Grand Prix victory for Ferrari, ahead of Russell and Lando Norris. Since then Antonelli has bounced back strongly, winning in Belgium, finishing second at Zandvoort and then producing that remarkable victory at Monza.
